Creation and Redemption
The second and largest section of the Apostle's Creed begins with a shift in focus to the very heart of the Christian faith - the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ.
In this transition from creation - "maker of heaven and earth" - to the Son the creed reflects a biblical flow of thought
The Apostles are concerned to make the same connection. John introduces his gospel thus: "In the beginning was the Word... Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made," John 1:1, 3.
Likewise, Paul tells the Colossians that Jesus "is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created... all things were created by Him and for Him," Col.1:15-16.
This is also an essentially gospel flow of thought. Paul goes on to tell the Colossians that the "all things" which the Son has made are also redeemed by Him: "For God was pleased... through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross," Col.1:19-20.
Jesus' own statement of the gospel, "God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son..." moves from the love of the Father to the love of the Son for the whole world - and the creed is following this same path.
